Carbon Emission Result

Assumptions:

  • Natural gas is current heating fuel.

  • For raw materials, 2500 tonnes of barley and 400 tonnes dry yeast is used.

  • Water usage was provided by the distillery to be 11 million litres.

  • Glass bottles were measured to be 600g with 100g of paper packaging per bottle based on a 70cl bottle that gives 715 tonnes of glass usage.

  • Paper and plastic used was measured and estimated as 18 and 1.9 tonnes respectively.

  • Number casks per year is based on Hogsheads Capacity of 220L to give a total number of casks as 4400 [1].

  • Transport has been calculated based on 25-ton HGV [2]. weight limit and the use of google maps for distances from suppliers. 12,272 miles from malting site, 150 miles from paper board supplier, 4,600 from glass supplier, 80,000 for barrels transportation on land were assumed based on above assumptions and distillery data.

Results:

Total site emissions are 3.63 million kgCO2e per year. Scope 3 emissions account for 76% of emissions with malting, glass and barrels having the largest effects. The top contributors to carbon emissions are 30% from malting, 29% from glass and 11% from barrels. Overall heating makes up 15% of all emissions.
